Kids get injured too! Like adults, children suffer from many types of knee injuries. Some knee conditions are unique to children. Osgood Schlatter's, chondromalacia patellae, Osteochondritis dissecans are just some of the more common knee conditions children face. Our company understands the need to provide products that address these conditions, taking into account the size requirements for these smaller knees.
The growth plate, also known as the epiphyseal plate or physis, is the area of growing tissue near the end of the long bones in children and adolescents. Each long bone has two growth plates at either end of the bone.
Osgood-Schlatter's disease is an apophysitis or inflammation of the growth plate in the leg bone. The apophysis are cartilaginous areas with their own growth plates and are sites for tendon insertion. Overuse may lead to microtrauma and inflammation where the quadriceps tendon inserts on the tibial tubercle.
Osgood-Schlatters usually affects boys about 13 years old and girls 11-12. It is the most common cause of knee pain in children less than 16 years old. Activities such as running, soccer, basketball and gymnastics seem to aggravate this condition. Osgood-Schlatter's disease usually occurs in the rapidly growing phase of early puberty.
